I’ve been trying to take short fast neighbourhood walks at least three times a week. It’s especially helpful when I’m working on the computer a lot. It gets the blood circulating.

On most of these walks I bring my smart phone so that I know when I’ve reached my 10,000 step goal. It also allows me to snap a few pics so that I remember what’s new in the hood.

Now, I finally have time to upload them. Or maybe it’s more like I’ve completely forgotten them. Anyways, it’s a mish-mash of Westfest and the edge of Hintonburg: Read the rest of this entry »

I’ve been meaning to post for a while. Lots of pics of new things in the hood.

  • The empty commercial spot on the east end of 101 Richmond Road has been leased. Zanadu Juice Bar is “opening soon”. Let’s hope it’s not like the cafe on Parkdale and Wellington.
  • Urban Cloud is a strange addition to the hood. It has no store front to entice you in, and I have no clue what they actually sell. Other than e-cigarettes. I guess they must have leased the building because the “For Sale” sign is back in front. Doesn’t make you want to go inside.
  • Going to the Parkdale Market may make you fat. If cold beers at the Carleton Tavern on a hot day aren’t enough to tempt you, maybe the future sweet treats will grab you. Holland’s Cake and Shake is opening soon. You can follow them on twitter here.
  • I had heard a while back that Suzy Q was opening a second location also near the Market. I had no idea how big it was going to be. Check out the big sign on top of the former Orange Gallery location.
  • Summer is here and so is live entertainment on the patio at Westboro Beach. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 5 to 11 p.m. Oh, and it’s free! And it’s licensed!
  • And if you’re out on the paths today, take care. If the crazy geese don’t get you, a fallen tree just might.

It’s free and it’s in the neighbourhood. And I’m happy they’re back. BOB FM has renamed them to Friday Night Flicks. The only one this summer at Westboro Beach is on Friday, June 13 and will feature The Lego Movie.

Remember, it’s free. You just need to bring a blanket or chair, a bag of popcorn and some DEET. Drinks are available at the canteen. And smokers …. leave your cigarettes at home. There is no smoking on the city beach.

It was a departure from the usual scene at Movies on the Beach. Instead of kids screaming and kicking up sand waiting for the movie to start, adults were out of the chairs kicking up their feet on the dance floor. And we had finally discovered Ottawa’s Ras Lee Reggae.

On a Friday evening in July, waiting for Harry Potter to begin, we’d heard the Maria Hawkins band perform on the patio at the Westboro Beach Cafe, run by the Newport on days the beach is open and the weather is fine. And on a Sunday evening, we’d cycled by and stopped to listen to a Latino band performing at sunset. But we’d never been by the beach on a Saturday evening. And it was the article in Saturday’s paper saying that the city is closing its beaches at the end of the weekend that made me think about heading down for a beer to watch the sun set. We had no idea that Ras Lee had been playing every Saturday night since the beginning of June. And clearly the band had established a following. Read the rest of this entry »

Woo-hoo! We must have been such an awesome audience, BOB FM has decided to hold its next Movies on the Beach at Westboro Beach on July 20, 2012. This time the movie will be:

The Muppets

So bring a lawn chair, bug spray, popcorn and something to drink. Or arrive early and enjoy the entertainment on the patio.

The inflatable screen is ready.

We were supposed to walk over to Westboro Beach with our camp chairs. But with a heat warning in effect, we decided to cycle over on our clunkers. I’d made microwave popcorn and packed up four cans of gingerale and some water into a cooler bag. We were all set to watch Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II.

The weather was perfect, hot but no rain in the forecast. Kids were still swimming until the sun finally set. On the patio, a live band (Maria Hawkins) was playing until the movie was ready to start. Camp chairs and blankets started to fill the beach.

And finally it was time for the movie to start. As in past years, BOB FM started off with the old drive-in movie intro.  If you’re old enough, you may remember the singing hot dog and the popcorn bags that sing and dance, “Let’s all go to the Lobby, let’s all go to the lobby …” All of a sudden I smelled smoke. Yes, in a sea of kids, one parent was puffing away on a cigarette. The parent beside me was astounded too. We discussed yelling “put it out” but in the end I decided to go up to the radio personalities and ask them to make an announcement reminding people that there’s no smoking on city property. The applause after his announcement embarrassed the woman into butting out and not lighting up again.

Unlike last year, we didn’t have to pack up our chairs and run for cover. The movie was okay, but then I’m not a really big Harry Potter fan. It was fun listening to the kids cheer when evil villains died. But for enjoyment, I’d say the movie Cars was way better.

Looking forward to it again next year.

Thanks to BOB FM, Movies on the Beach are back in 2012! Last Friday was Kanata (not a beach, but that’s what you get in the burbs I guess). Next up is Westboro Beach on July 6.

Unlike previous years, where they got you to vote for the movie, this year, it’s going to be ….

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II

Hopefully it won’t storm like it did last year.

Thanks to 93.9 BOB FM, Movies on the Beach are back. This weekend’s movie at Walter Baker Park in Kanata was postponed, but next up (Friday, July 8th) is Westboro. Voting starts this coming Monday. Just go to 93.9 BOB FM and look for the voting link.

I should warn you: although this is a childfree blog, movies on the beach usually include a lot of kids. But don’t worry, they’re better behaved than you’d expect. And besides, movies on the beach is about being a kid again. And there’s no better way to do that than having a bunch of kids around you.

Looking forward to a rain-free, bug-free July 8!

Bob FM is sponsoring Movies on the Beach again this summer. The schedule for 2010 is:

Friday June 25 – Westboro Beach
Friday July 9 – Walter Baker Park – Kanata
Friday July 23 – Petrie Island
Friday August 6 – Mooney’s Bay
Friday August 20 – Petrie Island

Cast your vote here by clicking on the Movies on the Beach icon.  Hopefully I’ll be able to cycle there and back by June 25!

At long last, I now know more about this year’s Movies on the Beach.  A few days ago the contractors were listening to BOB FM so I found out about how to vote for your choice of movies.

The first night will be June 26th at Westboro, so visit http://www.939bobfm.com/ to vote for your favourite “sing along” movie.  For opening night your choices are:

  • Grease
  • Mamma Mia
  • Rocky Horror Picture Show
  • Sound of Music
  • Hairspray
  • Phantom of the Paradise

I’m currently torn between voting for the Rocky Horror Picture Show and the Sound of Music. It would be entertaining to get up and dance to the Rocky Horror Picture Show. But, on the other hand, I know how much Nosy Neighbour loves to sing along to the Sound of Music.

After opening week, the schedules goes:

  • Fri. July 10th, 2009: Britannia Beach (movie theme TBA)
  • Fri. July 24th, 2009: Petrie Island (movie theme TBA)
  • Fri. August 7th, 2009: Mooney’s Bay (movie theme TBA)
  • Fri. August 21st, 2009: Petrie Island (movie theme TBA)

Hope they close out at Westboro like they did last year.
