The goal for this morning’s walk was Albert Island. I was curious to see any progress in access to the Zibi side, especially since the next Brewery Market is taking place there on October 22,  instead of Hintonburg. Sorry to report that the gates were locked. I did see some great autumn leaves along the river. And cyclists were even using their bells thus morning! Read the rest of this entry »

There has been a lot of talk in the media lately about Ontario’s new law that requires motorists to leave one metre between themselves and cyclists. Ottawa Police on bikes are testing a new sonar device to educate drivers about just how far that distance is. Delivery trucks are parking in bus lanes and buses are parking in bike lanes. Several newspaper columnists have written columns about their experiences either as a cyclist, driver or both. In all the comments, the one that spoke to me the most was the one that said something like: there are dickheads on bikes and dickheads behind the wheel. Please everyone stop being dickheads. Walking down Wellington I noticed that Times Used Sports is for lease. I checked their website and it doesn’t have any news.

Sad to see a local family business disappear.  But I suppose many use kijiji now.

It used to be a high end kitchen place, between Agave and the Wellington Gastropub. I wonder what it will be?

Recently I heard that Trailhead was moving. Literally,  the whole building. And that a Farm Boy was going in its place. Read the rest of this entry »

This year’s winter has been a bit of a yoyo so far. Some days I’ve walked the hood in a t-shirt. But today was bundle up and watch your step after last night’s flash freeze.

The monkeys sent me the link for my year in review. This year I thought I’d add my own thoughts about the past year.

I meant to blog a lot more than I did. I walked or cycled almost every day in the hood, sometimes snapping photos with my phone to remind myself that something new had popped up or closed down. But then I would get busy with life and forget to post. Read the rest of this entry »

It’s been such a long time since I’ve blogged about the neighbourhood. I’ve taken photos, then get sidetracked doing other things. Who knew I’d be so busy in retirement.

Just on the edge of Westboro, Illume coffee shop has closed. I can’t say I’m surprised. We tried to give them business but found a new employee there every visit, and only learned by chance that they offered a frequent buyer card. Not once we were told by staff. A “For Lease” is in the window now.

The building/lot at 270 Richmond Road is for sale, obviously to be redeveloped. The Miele vacuum cleaner business is moving elsewhere. I wonder whether Kitchenalia will be next.

It took two walk-bys before I realized a change a bit further west. World of Tea used to be just west of the bank. It now says Opium Decor. When I first glanced at the sign I thought it said Opium Dealer. World of Tea seems to have moved to 220 Bank Street.

Pietro’s corner is now open, although it was closed Easter Monday when we walked by. It’s too bad for them because a lot of people were out. It seems they are closed every Monday, but when we glanced in the window we saw a man who looked like a customer standing at the counter.

Beside Pietro’s is a new sign. Another commercial tenant. Opening soon is …. Fendi Hair Lounge and Blowdry Bar. After some sleuthing, I’ve discovered it’s Fendi Salon, which is located on Bank Street. It looks like they plan to open May 1. Can’t say I’m a big fan of their web site. But I’m probably not their target audience.

Digging has also begun beside the LCBO.

Happy Spring!

My bad. I’ve heard and seen new things going on and keep forgetting to update you.

So, here goes:

  • Milagro Grill in Westboro closed at the end of September. A new vegetarian restaurant (operated by different owners) is going into its place
  • The Barley Mow will be opening a location near the Piggy Market some time this month.
  • Next summer postal codes K1Y and K1Z will be the first urban areas to lose their home mail delivery service. If you live in these postal codes, expect to receive mail from Canada Post as part of its “consultation” on super mailbox locations.

I’ll try harder to post more often. I promise.

I’ve been meaning to post for a while. Lots of pics of new things in the hood.

  • The empty commercial spot on the east end of 101 Richmond Road has been leased. Zanadu Juice Bar is “opening soon”. Let’s hope it’s not like the cafe on Parkdale and Wellington.
  • Urban Cloud is a strange addition to the hood. It has no store front to entice you in, and I have no clue what they actually sell. Other than e-cigarettes. I guess they must have leased the building because the “For Sale” sign is back in front. Doesn’t make you want to go inside.
  • Going to the Parkdale Market may make you fat. If cold beers at the Carleton Tavern on a hot day aren’t enough to tempt you, maybe the future sweet treats will grab you. Holland’s Cake and Shake is opening soon. You can follow them on twitter here.
  • I had heard a while back that Suzy Q was opening a second location also near the Market. I had no idea how big it was going to be. Check out the big sign on top of the former Orange Gallery location.
  • Summer is here and so is live entertainment on the patio at Westboro Beach. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 5 to 11 p.m. Oh, and it’s free! And it’s licensed!
  • And if you’re out on the paths today, take care. If the crazy geese don’t get you, a fallen tree just might.
