Recently, the mainstream media has been reporting on the sentencing of the Royal Bank fire bomber. Just about every outlet has reported that he was a retired civil servant. Hello? It’s Ottawa and I’m guessing that more than half of the population has worked for one level of government at some point.

Okay, maybe you’ve figured out that I’m miffed because I’m a civil servant. If the fact that he was a civil servant had any bearing on his case I wouldn’t have a problem with it. If he were a retired cop, you could see how that would add value because he broke the law. So unless he was working on the Olympic file before he retired I don’t see how it adds value to the story.

Here are some examples:

  • CBC Ottawa (and the National) says “A retired civil servant who firebombed a Royal Bank branch in Ottawa’s Glebe neighbourhood in May has been sentenced to 3½ years in prison for arson.”
  • CTV Ottawa also leads with “A retired public servant who pleaded guilty to firebombing an RBC branch in Ottawa’s Glebe neighbourhood was sentenced Tuesday to three and a half years in jail.”
  • The Ottawa Citizen leads with “A retired bureaucrat who firebombed a Glebe bank has been sentenced to slightly more than three-and-half years in prison Tuesday.”

Grrrrr …. it’s all I can say.
