Amidst the sweltering heat of the past few days (and without being able to turn on the air conditioning because of all the renovation dirt and dust in the vents), I learned a few things about the hood:

  • The Cube Gallery will be moving into the old Diwali’s location on Wellington near Holland
  • Watch for 140 new bike racks to arrive in Wellington West (Source: West Wellington Business Improvement Area)
  • The city plans to “green” several temporary parking spots along Wellington. Watch for greening to happen near Gilchrist, Ross and Grange. Not sure what “greening” means, but will look to take some photos.

This weekend, we took a leisurely cycle ride down to Westboro to pick up a gift card for my sister’s birthday. We coasted along the Byron pathway keeping an eye out for anything new heading west from our patch. A few interesting developments in Westboro, and an update on openings in Wellington West are in order.

From the June 18, 2009 edition of the Kitichissippi Times:

The 6th annual Hintonburg free summer movie nights begin June 20 at the Hintonburg Community Centre on Wellington Street (near the GT Express). Two movies are shown each night, with the first starting at 7 p.m. inside geared for kids and the second starting at 9 p.m. shown outside. This year’s line up includes:

  • June 20: Bedtime Stories and Slumdog Millionaire
  • July 18:  Hotel for Dogs and Marley and Me
  • August 15: Bolt (6:30 start) and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (8:30 start)

Don’t forget to check for Movies on the Beach this summer too. So much to do.

At long last, I now know more about this year’s Movies on the Beach.  A few days ago the contractors were listening to BOB FM so I found out about how to vote for your choice of movies.

The first night will be June 26th at Westboro, so visit to vote for your favourite “sing along” movie.  For opening night your choices are:

  • Grease
  • Mamma Mia
  • Rocky Horror Picture Show
  • Sound of Music
  • Hairspray
  • Phantom of the Paradise

I’m currently torn between voting for the Rocky Horror Picture Show and the Sound of Music. It would be entertaining to get up and dance to the Rocky Horror Picture Show. But, on the other hand, I know how much Nosy Neighbour loves to sing along to the Sound of Music.

After opening week, the schedules goes:

  • Fri. July 10th, 2009: Britannia Beach (movie theme TBA)
  • Fri. July 24th, 2009: Petrie Island (movie theme TBA)
  • Fri. August 7th, 2009: Mooney’s Bay (movie theme TBA)
  • Fri. August 21st, 2009: Petrie Island (movie theme TBA)

Hope they close out at Westboro like they did last year.

A tiny “sold” sign was added to the big “for sale” sign on the Istanbouli sign on Wellington at Carleton.

I’m guessing this means the Istanbouli may be closing its Wellington Street location, and sooner rather than later. Tamarack has sold the land, and with the variances all approved, I expect the new developer will move ahead fast. Why else would would you buy it?

We’ll see if we can get the scoop on who bought it.
